Question: I know you’re a big fan of scents and lures. What scent do you prefer?Grigsby: I like Spike-It’s Garlic and Crawfish scents. I believe both are very effective. Instead of simply spraying the scent on, I prefer to use Spike-It Slime-It Aerosel Gel in these flavors. One of the problems with scents is that they tend to wash off your bait quickly. I don’t know whether bass are part Italian, but I do know they like that garlic scent. I like to put the Spike-It Garlic Scent Slime-It on my most of my lures. Since it’s so thick, I think it holds the scent on the lure much longer and is much more effective at keeping the garlic scent attached to it for a longer period than other scents. If garlic doesn’t make a difference in an angler's ability to catch a bass, we won’t see garlic flavor in most of the lures the bass anglers fish. I’m a firm believer that the bass like that garlic flavor. I can’t tell you why that is, but I can tell you that it works. I also use the Spike-It’s Slime-It Aerosel Gel to lubricate the lure. Here’s why. I use the flipping technique often. Since Slime-It is so thick and slippery, it allows your lure to penetrate the cover more effectively than if you didn’t have Slime-It on your jig, spinner bait or whatever lure you’re flipping. When a lure encounters cover, it generates friction. The more friction the lure generates with that cover, the less likely the bait’s going to be to get through the cover or get through it quickly. I believe in flipping and trying to get a reaction strike from bass. I want my lure to surprise the bass and pass by it quickly to get the fish to strike instinctively because it sees the lure and doesn’t know exactly what it is, but thinks it ought to eat that lure. Therefore, if I can use a product like Slime-It to allow my lure to penetrate the cover faster, I can drastically increase the number of reaction strikes I get when I’m flipping. The bottom line is that the Spike-It’s Slime-It enables me to catch more fish because it penetrates the cover and has that strong garlic or crawfish scent. I think that because Spike-It’s Slime-It is so thick, it holds the scent to the lure longer and puts out more scent in the water over a longer time than spray-on scents do. To increase the potency of your scents, use a product like Slime-It that puts out more scent longer than spray-on scents do. I bassfish for a living, and Spike-It products help me earn that living. If they didn’t work, I couldn’t afford to use them.
